Laparoscopic & Open surgeries

For Cancer, Reconstructive & Pediatric procedures Open and Laparoscopic Approaches to Obesity Surgery The open approach involves an 8 to 10 inch incision to open the abdomen and perform the surgery in open view of the surgical team. The laparoscopic approach creates five or six small incisions (1/4 or 1/2 inch long) instead of the one larger incision. In the laparoscopic method, a small fiberoptic tube (the laparoscope), connected to a video camera, is inserted through the small abdominal incisions. This gives the surgeon a magnified view of the patient's internal organs on a television screen next to the operating table. The entire operation is performed "inside" the abdomen, after gas has been used to expand it, with the instruments inserted through the various small incisions.

Advantages & Disadvantages of Laparoscopy :

The rate of hernias (a complication in 10 to 20 percent of open procedures) is significantly reduced. Laparoscopic surgery also protects the patient's immune function, whereas open surgery can compromise the immune system and even promote the growth of any existing tumors. The amount of time the operation takes is not significant to the outcome of the surgery, but it can increase the risk of developing blood clots or wound infections. The longer time on the operating table may affect patients with severe apnea or heart disease and perhaps should be avoided by those patients.

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy(PCNL)

Percutaneous NephroLithotomy (PCNL) is the preferred technique for treating larger kidney stones (over 2cm in diameter) located within the kidney. It involves keyhole surgery that is performed through a 1cm incision in the skin (see diagram). A mini-PERC is similar in approach, but represents a refinement in the technique due to having smaller cameras, better stone lasers and specialized tools. The incision that is made in the skin is much smaller and allows for quicker patient recovery and results in a safer procedure.

  • For large kidney stones.
  • Flexible nephroscope to remove stones from different parts of the kidney through single puncture.

LASER(LISA-Holmium)

The ablative effect of the Holmium-YAG laser is based on the high absorption of the Holmium laser energy in water and in biological tissue containing water. The pulsed energy of the laser radiation is converted into heat within a depth of tissue of less than 0.5 mm, making it ideal for use in ablation processes.

Power: Depending upon your application, LISA laser offers a range of four lasers starting at 30 watts, and increasing to 45 watts and 60 watts. Each of these units can be upgraded to the highest power available, 80 watts. If you are breaking stones, the shorter the pulse width the better. LISA laser has the shortest pulse width available at 150 microsecs.

Shockwave Lithotripsy(SWL)DORNIER

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) is a well-established and most common procedure for the treatment of urinary stones. In general, it ensures a high success rate with low adverse effects. The success of ESWL is dependant upon several factors such as stone location, stone composition, stone size, patient’s body characteristics and risk factors, pain management, treatment strategies, and the shock wave parameters. The effectiveness of the shock wave is also related to the absence of anatomical structures within the shock wave path and the accuracy with which the stone is located and aligned in the therapy focus of the shock wave source.

Symptoms:

  • Frequent, burning or slow urination
  • Blood in the urine
  • Fever, nausea and/or vomitting

Prostate Surgery

The prostate is a gland located underneath the bladder, in front of the rectum. It plays an important role in the part of the male reproductive system that produces fluids that carry sperm. Surgery for partial or complete removal of the prostate is called a prostatectomy. The most common causes for prostate surgery are prostate cancer and an enlarged prostate, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Types of prostate surgery:

  • TURP
  • Laparoscopic approach
  • Transurethral incision of the prostate (TUIP)

Chronic Renal Diseases

Renal Transplantation

(The approximate cost of surgery is three lakhs of rupees Rs.3 lakhs)

Chronic kidney disease is a slow progressive loss of kidney function over a period of several years. Eventually, the patient has permanent kidney failure. Chronic kidney disease, also known as chronic renal failure, chronic renal disease, or chronic kidney failure, is much more widespread than people realize; it often goes undetected and undiagnosed until the disease is well advanced.

Vascular Access

Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD)

It is not unusual for people to realize they have chronic kidney failure only when their kidney function is down to 25 percent of normal.

Intensive Care Unit

Managed by well trained anaesthesiologists

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a unit in the hospital where seriously ill patients are cared for by specially trained staff. The ICU staff includes doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, clinical nurse specialists, pharmacists, physical therapists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, dietitians, social workers, and chaplains. You can expect to speak with a doctor on a regular basis. Members of the ICU team meet with the patient and/or family to ensure that everyone has a common understanding of the health condition and the plan of care. During these meetings, it is a good time for family members to ask any questions of the health care team.
